Taste Smith-Madrone Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon and Riesling while having a conversation via Zoom with vintner Stu Smith. In almost 50 years of being a Napa Valley vintner there’s not much that Stu hasn’t done, seen or experienced. Smith-Madrone is a small producer of estate grown grapes and artisanal wines, whose wines have an international reputation for being beautifully crafted. Their Riesling is recognized as one of the top 20 dry Rieslings in the world.
A special price of $110 covers the wines and shipping, at a special rate only for Homecoming participants.
Stu Smith (B.A. Economics, 1970) played freshman football and rugby. While at Cal, Stu realized he liked wine more than beer and became an inter-campus exchange student, taking the introductory winegrowing class at U.C. Davis. That led him to grad school at Davis in Viticulture and Enology and he became the department’s first T.A. In 1971 he founded Smith-Madrone Winery with his brother. They cleared the land, planted the vineyard and built the winery located at the top of Spring Mountain just west of St. Helena in the Napa Valley. In the early years of establishing Smith-Madrone, Stu taught Enology and Viticulture at both Santa Rosa Junior College and Napa Valley Community College. He was Chair of the 1986 Napa Valley Wine Auction and co-chaired the 2005 Auction. Today he is respected for his expertise and leadership as a mountain winegrower. Participating in this year’s Homecoming festivities is especially meaningful for Stu, since his graduation ceremony in 1970 was cancelled.
